This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The history of the United States and its people Edward Eggleston Books

For us, this is a textbook for an online homeschool history class, but it can easily be read aloud as a family. I love the details! They are written in a way that we feel like we are being told the actual story from some one much closer in time to the event. The material is plain and simple...America is what it is and was challenged the way it has been...without provoking specific political beliefs or attitudes. Through a combination of this book and their online teacher, I can see my children's hearts sink over the struggles American citizens and earlier settlers have experienced in this nation and the challenge American men have faced head on for freedoms. I think that is an important insight for children to find in the course of learning...especially without me telling my personal opinion! The reading lengths of each chapter are manageable for us and work very well with our teacher's chapter homework on state research, prominent character research, new vocabulary, and discussion questions. I give it f 4 stars, because I just can't make out some of the details on the maps and illustrations and the kids aren't drawn into those small black and white illustrations either. As a schooling course's read aloud or read together in our case, we are playing tug of war with a little book...if it were printed even an inch larger the maps and illustrations would be fantastic.

The history of the United States and its people Edward Eggleston Books Reviews

Get the hardcover version. This is a print on demand version with no pictures, no real chapters, no paragraphs. It is literally a mish-mosh of text. This technology, as they explain it, scans the original text and then converts the info using Optical Character Recognition. If the 'robot' misreads the word, the word is converted inaccurately. I am sure this is a good book and I was looking forward to using it, but do yourself a favor and get the hardcover version. This is actually worth zero stars. Will be returning this book.
Very good product!
This is a good basic reader for young teens. Easy writing style and full of the basics of US history.
Wonderful History book! History book used in schools in by-gone days. True information. Good for homeschooling! Wonderful addition to any historical library.
Excellent book for begginers, I learned so much from it. The maps and pictures are very helpful. I loved it. I highly recommend it.
I am very unhappy with this book- it was expensive for a middle school book... but the quality was low. There are several pages that cannot be read because it looks like the printer ran out of in and there is a white streak down the middle. How can I ask my daughter to read this book if it cannot be read.
When I received the book in the mail I was immediately pleased with it's format. The dimensions differ from what is posted (instead of 13.2 x 5.5 it's closer to 8x6) which was actually a nice surprise; it's a more compact/portable book than expected. The cover illustration is printed directly on the book and not a book jacket. The illustrations inside are a very high quality. There are Hundreds and hundreds of detailed images done by a handful of artists. The Maps, like the pictures are sharp and clear. Many of the pages are also broken up with sub panels of information. Short biographies, object descriptions etc. These only add to the inviting quality of this book. Highly recommended to all, history buffs and students.

FYI, This review is for the 'Lost classics book co.' version. The new 2010 version listed here seems to be a lesser book. This new version is considerably shorter and much more expensive. I recommend tracking down the hardcover Lost classics version, with the spirit of '76 painting on the front.
